Gummatous osteitis of the skull.

چکیده
A single man aged 65 years was referred to the Department of Venereology in 1949 on account of extensive necrosis of the skull and gangrene of the right foot. The precipitating factor was an obnoxious smell, attributed to a blocked drain, which was reported by some of his neighbours to the local Sanitary Authority. Through the Medical Officer of Health, the patient was eventually compelled to allow the Sanitary Authority's representative to enter the premises and the source of the smell was soon apparent, that is to say, from the necrotic skull.

Morbidity arising from syphilitic infection in westem countries has progressively declined (Moore, 1951), although there have been reports suggesting that syphilis, especially general paralysis of the insane (GPI), may be increasing again (Steel, 1960; Gooddy, Gautier-Smith, and Dunkley, 1960; Bockner and Coltart, 1961; Brit. med. J7., 1965). The recent publications are mostly reports of isolat...

Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum (TP), a fragile spiral motile organism. At the infectious stage it rarely causes life-threatening or serious illness. Natural history studies undertaken in Oslo (1890–1910) and Tuskegee in the US (1932) suggest that up to 35% of patients with early syphilis will develop serious neurological, cardiovascular or gummatous disease if untreated. Organisms alm...

Symptomatic Disease Bone disease in its florid form, osteitis fibrosa cystica generalizata, is now rarely seen. In 1947 Norris (1) found an incidence of this condition of 91% in those with a parathyroid adenoma. The earliest changes can be detected by X-rays of the hands where subperiosteal erosions can be detected in the phalanges (especially radial aspect of the middle phalanges) and terminal...
متن کاملTuberculous osteitis of the skull in a child.
Tuberculosis is endemic in developing countries. However, skull tuberculosis is uncommon with few cases reported in the literature. We report a 10-year-old boy admitted for a left parietal painless swelling. A CT scan demonstrated a left parietal bony defect, destroying both inner and outer tables. This was associated with an enhanced epidural collection and scalp swelling. The patient was oper...
